Asphaltenes – What are they?

Asphaltenes (25ml) are high molecular weight chemicals found in crude oil, but concentrated in residual fuel oils. They are typically found in a solid form and the term Asphaltenes derives from their asphalt / bitumen like properties.

Tested On: Marine Engines, Heavy Fuel or Petroleum products

Diagnostic significance: Asphaltenes can form solid precipitates in pipelines and reservoirs causing blockages. In addition, in marine applications these particles can cause abrasive wear to components, hence it is important to analyse on all marine engines using heavy fuel oils.

Typical Diagnostic limit: Typically flagged at ~0.5% in engine oil depending on engine type and size.
